The Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild had the opportunity to write an article about Salish weaving. At the time it was a popular trend; many guilds had learned to weave in the Salish style and created beautiful tapestries. The Whonnock Weavers had the fortune of having an anthropologist on the team and after a visit to the Salish Weavers in Yarrow, at the Coqualeetza Cultural Education Centre, the group wrote the article.  It was published in Weavers Journal Magazine Fall issue of 1984. The Whonnock Weavers & Spinners of Maple Ridge, BC is holding a workshop in Mission, BC on September 9 & 10, 2017 and there are a few spaces available if anyone is interested. The description is: ‘Weaving Bootcamp’ with Barbara Mitchell   This is for new weavers, occasional weavers and experienced weavers who would like a refresher.  This workshop takes the new weaver from an empty loom through to weaving confidently by the end of the workshop.  It includes measuring the warp, sleying, threading, winding on and tying-on, and weaving both plain weave and twill, and also reading and understanding a draft.  Each participant would work on their own table…

The Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Guild did a sheep to scarf project as a group to celebrate Canada’s 150th at Country Fest 2017.  We purchased a fleece earlier this year and we skirted it, we washed it, we combed it, and we spun it in to yarn. From that yarn we knitted , we crocheted  and we wove with it. At Country Fest we demonstrated all of this and used up the last of what we had.

Story of the bear: A gentleman approached our guild asking if anyone would be willing to spin Bear fur for him to have a sweater made! Well, I was curious so asked some questions which led to more discussion which led to me saying, “OK, I’ll give it a go”. I don’t think any one else in our guild was even remotely interested and this should have been a clue for me to pick up on! I informed him it should be blended with another short fibre and I chose Shetland after consulting some other experienced guilders.
